This weekend marked the beginning of a new watch company. Earthen is a new Hong Kong-based company that makes highly refreshing watches. Ceramic has been the hype case material of the past few years, with brands like Zenith and IWC being very successful in making their ceramic timepieces. Those watches do come at a hefty cost, so it is very refreshing to see highly affordable ceramic watches.
They have started with three pieces; they will only make 100 units of each as a first batch and will create more if these do well. The colors are cool as Ceramic allows the case to be in unique and fun colors. One piece has a black case and a black dial and bears the name Overcast; the other two have a white case. The one with the white case and black dial is named the Whiteout, and the white case and white dial is named the Bluebird for the blue strap and blue accents in the crown.
This collection is named the summit, which is in line with the alpine ski inspiration for these watches. The dimensions on these pieces are also pretty nice, as they are in a compact 38 mm case with a lug-to-lug size of 45 mm and a thickness of 10 mm. It uses a sapphire crystal for the glass and the 9039 Miyota automatic caliber to power the watch. With 100 meters of water resistance, this becomes a fun and unique alternative to the Seiko and Hamilton watches in this price range and the one below.
If I am a sucker for anything, then I am a sucker for good lume, and this watch 100% falls into the great lume category. The lume on the Whiteout and Overcast watches is cool but nothing special, but the lume on the Bluebird is sick. I always love full lume dials as I just feel like it is such an extra and pointless feature that brings the watch so much more personality.
For pricing, we are looking at a fair price of just 899$. I consider this a good price as you are getting a unique piece that won’t break the bank and won’t excite mechanically, but will provide a fun alternative to more conservative pieces.
If you want to snatch one for yourself or just take a closer look, which I highly suggest you do, I will leave a link to their website here.
